Forget me not - a tribute in memory of Norman Gifford MBE

In September 1975, as a ten year old, I met Norman and had my photograph taken with him at a benefit match for Basil D’Olivera at the Duke of Westminster’s estate at Eaton Hall. 38 years later, at a dinner in the Long Room at Lord’s being held to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Wisden Almanack, I was fortunate to talk with Norman again. On both occasions he made me feel truly special. RIP Norman (Wisden Cricketer of the Year 1975)

My first ever visit to New Road was in 1972 when my uncle took me to a Championship game against Kent. Four years later I was at Lords for the B and H final, also against Kent which we lost. Those were happy times watching cricket and the names still trip off the tongue, Turner, Ormrod, d'Oliveira, Holder, and, of course, our captain, a wise and experienced head marshalling the team and bowling over after over of accurate spin. Norman brought joy to many people he never met and that, for me, is a mark of a life well lived. Thank you Norman and may you rest in peace.

As a kid watching Worcester ccc in the 70s,which were great memories, always looked up to our captain,and I can see him bowling, he once did a bouncer which was funny at the time,and the 1st reverse sweep which I'd never seen before, RIP Norman 🙏.
